In April of 1997 a 17 member steering committee consisting of some downtown business and property owners, Chamber of Commerce members, local government officials, etc. formed. Their idea was to improve business conditions to attract more people to the waterfront and Arendell Street. This group became known as Downtown Morehead City, Inc. and is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to making Downtown Morehead City a vital community. Morehead City became a Main Street Community in 2000 and became an accredited Main Street America community this year! As a Main Street America™ Accredited program, Downtown Morehead City, Inc. is a recognized leading program among the national network of more than 1,200 neighborhoods and communities who share both a commitment to creating high-quality places and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development.
Morehead City is grateful for Downtown Morehead City, Inc and what they do to make MHC a great place to live. They host Alive at Five on the waterfront during the summer months. They also put together the Weekend Weigh-In time which is a great list of what is going on downtown MHC.
