Philanthropy Spotlight: Shoes for Schools
Iva Fearing
Shoes for Schools is the brainchild of West Carteret senior Mary Beth Garrison whose goal is to “help ensure every child without shoes can step into school with confidence!” Inspired by watching her mother, a dedicated kindergarten teacher and others like her, spend her own money to provide shoes for kids that need them. Please support this effort by purchasing new children’s shoes sizes 10-3 for elementary students. No shoe boxes are necessary.
Drop off your donations at the following locations: Morehead City Primary School (4409 Country Club Rd.), Tassels Ladies Boutique (4426 Arendell St. Suite 7A-B), or First Methodist Church of Morehead City ( 900 Arendell Street). Donations will gladly be accepted all summer long!

Philanthropy Spotlight: Keli Wagner Lady Angler (KWLA) Tournament
Iva Fearing
We are so blessed in Carteret County to have one of the largest ladies-only fishing events in the whole world! The KWLA tournament is named in honor of Keli Wagner, late wife of Big Rock board member, Casey Wagner, who lost her battle with cancer in 2008. This year the tournament will be June 7-8th with proceeds benefiting several Carteret County charities. Please join us at Tassels on Tuesday, June 11th for Marlins and Mimosas for a refreshing beverage , pop-up shows from Michelle Bradley Robinson House of MBR caftans and art and world renowned jewelry by Dean Davidson. We will be raffling off many items with all proceeds benefiting the KWLA. Also, on June 13th, The Posh Pelican is sponsoring “ Fashion For A Cause”, a fashion show featuring cute and trendy looks from local boutiques. The event will take place on 11-1 at The Dunes Club in Atlantic Beach. Proceeds from the event will benefit the KWLA.
Philanthropic Spotlight - Shackleford Horses
Iva Fearing Locals and visitors alike will tell you that one major draw to the beautiful Crystal Coast are the wild Shackleford horses. Here they are a unique historic and cultural legacy as well as a natural and scientific resource. In 1996 a group of concerned Carteret County citizens started the Foundation for Shackleford Horses, Inc. This non-profit corporation was formed out of concern about the announced plans by the National Park Service to reduce the size of the herd of wild horses on Shackleford Banks to numbers that people believed would be detrimental to them. Foundation members consulted with scientists, veterinarians, and equine experts who shared their time, their expertise, their thoughtful consideration to maintaining a viable herd on Shackleford and the concerns of the public, and gave the Foundation members the necessary information to move forward as confident and credible advocates for the horses. That information and advocacy resulted in the enactment of the Shackleford Banks Wild Horses Protection Act in 1998, which ensured the preservation and protection of the wild horses of Shackleford, and co-management of the herd by the National Park Service and the Foundation for Shackleford Horses, Inc.

Philanthropic Spotlight -CPM Billfish Tournament
Iva Fearing The third annual CPM Billfish Tournament will take place on May
17-21 on the Morehead City Waterfront. Events include a Kids’ Fishing Day,
a raffle, silent auction items, CPM gear for sale, and an Awards Banquet
and Party! You may be wondering how this tournament came about;Chris
Perri was a husband, father, friend, and outdoorsman. He was diagnosed
with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in June of 2020 and lost his
courageous, seven-month battle in January of 2021. The primary goal of
the Tournament is to raise funds for AML research and share Chris' love of
fishing with the next generation of fishermen and women through the
CPM Kids Tournament. The funds raised will be part of an endowment in
Chris' name at UNC where they will directly impact AML research, patients
and providers.
