Philanthropic Spotlight -Project Christmas Cheer

Initially established to provide Christmas gifts to Carteret County children through the process of the children being “adopted” from local Angel Trees, Project Christmas Cheer has grown to both providing gifts to the children, and food or gift cards to qualifying seniors. Thanks to the individuals, businesses, churches, and community organizations of Carteret County that have over the years provided financial support and have adopted children and families to ensure that all in the community can share in the joy of Christmas. Project Christmas Cheer is now in the process of their fund drive for monetary donations to help provide gifts to children that have not been assigned to an Angel Tree. They also provide gift cards for all seniorswho are approved for assistance during this Christmas season.  During the 2022 Christmas season, 648 Angels were adopted and 168 Senior Citizens had gifts provided . Please send monetary contributions to  Project Christmas Cheer PO Box 1914, MHC or Venmo your contribution to @PCC2021.                                         They can also be contacted by phone at 252-247-7275 or email at coordinator@projectchristmascheer.com

Philanthropic Spotlight - Shackleford Horses
Charity/Non-profit

Philanthropic Spotlight - Shackleford Horses

Locals and visitors alike will tell you that one major draw to the beautiful Crystal Coast are the wild Shackleford horses. Here they are a unique historic and cultural legacy as well as a natural and scientific resource. In 1996 a group of concerned Carteret County citizens started the Foundation for Shackleford Horses, Inc. This non-profit corporation was formed out of concern about the announced plans by the National Park Service to reduce the size of the herd of wild horses on Shackleford Banks to numbers that people believed would be detrimental to them. Foundation members consulted with scientists, veterinarians, and equine experts who shared their time, their expertise, their thoughtful consideration to maintaining a viable herd on Shackleford and the concerns of the public, and gave the Foundation members the necessary information to move forward as confident and credible advocates for the horses. That information and advocacy resulted in the enactment of the Shackleford Banks Wild Horses Protection Act in 1998, which ensured the preservation and protection of the wild horses of Shackleford, and co-management of the herd by the National Park Service and the Foundation for Shackleford Horses, Inc.
